Killzone 2 has a lot riding on it. In fact I can’t think of any game that’s gone before that has the weight of a whole section of the gaming community holding their collective breath, so desperately wanting for the promise to become a reality and for the PS3 to eventually begin to deliver.
But we’ve been here before. The original Killzone was the Playstation’s great white hope and it was supposed to launch Sony’s online offering in a bid to catch up with the runaway Xbox Live experience. It failed. Even more pressure now on Killzone 2 as the PS3 needs an exclusive title that will make the console stand out and be taken seriously as it competes with other more successful titles on rival systems.
So can PS3 gamers take their hands down from their faces and peek long enough to see if their prayers have been answered? For the most part the answer is Yes! In PS3 terms Killzone 2 is the best First Person Shooter (FPS) available and it gets very close to matching the rival Xbox exclusives such as Halo 3 and Gears of War 2.
The game follows on from the storylines of the previous two Killzone games – Killzone Liberation being a semi-sequel on the PSP. This time you’re bringing the fight to the Helghast as you invade their home world Helghan in a bid to finish the war once and for all.
Killzone 2 doesn’t waste any time impressing you. In fact the initial cut scene even before the action starts is a thing of beauty and unequalled on any platform. You immediately get a sense that something special is about to happen and to be honest the game is one wild ride from that point forward.
There will be comparisons to the original Killzone game but to be honest they are not relevant or even required. Killzone was so many years ago now and on the last-generation platform that even if Killzone 2 was dire it would still outclass it in almost every department – especially that Killzone was so widely criticised first time out.
Comparisons with Halo, Call of Duty and Gears of War are most definitely relevant and the yardstick from which this game will be measured. And the one thing all those three games have in common is a very strong online element. And we all know that online longevity is what gamers want these days and they’ll even sacrifice a short, albeit demanding, offline campaign to get it.
The surprising thing about Killzone 2 is that it delivers both a brilliant single player campaign and a very high standard multiplayer experience in equal measures – a very hard thing to achieve and something that catapults it into maybe the top 5-6 games of all time – across all consoles.
The first thing that hits you when you play Killzone 2 is the incredible graphics. When I first booted up the game I thought I was watching actual actors play out the cut scene – it wasn’t. I later couldn’t believe that the maps could be so detailed and manage to cope with everything going on with apparent ease.
If you are familiar with the visual differences between games and play a lot of these FPS then Killzone is firstly going to confuse you and then leave you with your mouth open. You just can’t believe what’s going on in front of you.
The gameplay is as equally impressive. Normally when I get these games I spent the first level looking out for things of interest as the game brings me through the “tutorial”. I also tend to play these things as hard as they come to try and get a sense of what the developers intended the game to play like.
