I woke up in my pyjamas this morning with the letters vroooom scrawled across them, all pre-planned as today is the official launch day of Microsoft’s Forza Motorsport 2. The original Forza came out on the old XBOX and was Microsoft’s first real attempt at taking a slice out of Sony’s Gran Tourismo series and also to give the XBOX platform it’s very own real racing game both of which Microsoft achieved with some top end torque to spare.
So thanks to the good people in the Microsoft garage, WGL have been given the opportunity to road test Forza Motorsport 2 a couple of days ahead of today’s 1st qualifying laps and I have to say I have already had a few late nights to get to grips with some of the top end cars and tracks.
This game is every car maniacs dream, and must be seen to be believed. It plays so smoothly thanks to its 60FPS rate and beautifully rendered graphics, you will not find a more realistic driving simulation than Forza 2. The games physics are finely tuned to give the most authentic racing simulation possible, without actually needing to put on a helmet. The game was built from the ground up all over again, new code, new AI behaviour and new tracks.
The game was built with the Microsoft Steering Wheel in mind and is an amazing experience to use with real physical force feedback given off through the wheel; you cannot get closer to the real thing.
The sound in this game is amazing, hearing the turbo on your brand new Toyota winding down is unbelievable, it must have took the game developer’s months to capture all the real life engine sounds to be put into the game, as well as tire squeals and of course crashes, high impact crashes sound so real they are terrifying.
Microsoft have completely revamped the Paint Editor which is so detailed and in-depth, each car can have thousands of layers of paint and decals on it, leading to some breathtaking designs found online, it really is a case of if you can imagine it on a car, you can design it on Forza 2’s Livery Editor.
The career mode in Forza 2 is a lot like before, with a number of different tournaments and cups, each with their own special requirements and rewards, some more difficult than others, it is highly addictive stuff
Once again Forza’s multiplayer is bliss, flawless in every way, with many multiplayer options ranging from system link , split screen and Xbox Live. Another thing that is well worth mentioning is the brand new Auction House, which basically is just like eBay, where players can auction their cars and others can bid, or buy out right another player’s car and if it’s one of a kind then the price will be high. |
