I have waited many many years for this moment to come , to see a football management game on a console that does exactly what its PC counterpart does and probably some more. For years, console gamers have had to endure many mediocre management games that were far from the excellent games on PC's. This was mainly due to the fact that consoles were not powerful enough to summarise all the data going on in a game of this magnitude. Long loading time and less detailed games dumbed down for the console's were common knowledge. But now the time has come where consoles are equally as powerful as PC's and are now able to process all this data just as quickly. The first console to do this, the Xbox 360. The first game to do this, Football Manager 2006.
Sports Interactive Games have been around for years, producing possibly the greatest management franchise in the 1990's with Championship Manager. Moving on from its famous creation, they decided to resurrect the old franchise from the 90's, Football Manager with the help of publishers Sega. After bringing Football Manager 05 and 06 was released to much great reviews and out surpassing its previous series, they needed to crack the console market which was so hard to break with an updated version of 06. What is like you say? Let me tell you.
First off, let me tell you that this is probably the most detailed game around. There are millions of stats stored in this game to help you become the manager you want to be. Every kind of statistic you can think of from players, teams and other managers is in the game. An awful lot of work has been put into this game to make the experience as realistic as possible.
One problem console management games has always found difficult was to translate the flawless control system from mouse and keyboard to console controller. It never ever has been implemented right by any game, but the Xbox 360 controller is perfect for this. It was like it was made for management games. The shoulder buttons control the left and right menu bars that have always appeared in a SI games. The left bar for all of your usual management options like viewing your team, transfer lists etc . The second bar includes another extra menu for the specific page your on. For example, if you happen to be looking at another teams squad and use the menu, it gives options of comparing your team to theirs or commenting on another manager or absolutely anything. Gives another dimension to the management games. The control system may seem a little confusing at first but trust me, you'll realise its godsend.
The top down view of watching matches is back in the series again but given the amount of customisation in the game, you can either turn this on or off. In my opinion this is the most realistic management game yet(as if they weren't already). Making comments to the media, fans, rival teams or management board is just as important as your ability to purchase players, motivate your team or win matches. Its become a much more detailed game with the slightest mistake could jeopardise your whole season. In the 360 version, we get the exclusivity of having online play via Xbox Live. SI games have given us the choice to set up 16 player tournaments and leagues to play online. Its just as important playing online now than before as we can transport our own saved teams from single player and play them online. All this makes for a great experience.
On a whole, you have to admit that Football Manager 06 is probably the most engaging, intimate engrossing management game around. Its conversion from PC to console is flawless and with the excellent control system and Xbox Live play, its probably better than its PC big brother. Trust me, if you like football, you're gonna love this. |
