Halo 3: ODST
preview of Bungie's latest Halo game. - 07/08/2009 |
Halo 3: ODST (Orbital Drop Shock Trooper) is the latest Halo game to be released. A first person shooter using the Halo 3 engine. At a first glance at this game you will be forgiven for thinking its Halo 3, moments later though you will notice that you no longer play the hero from the previous Halo games Master Chief but “The Rookie”, a new member to a the ODST.
Gone are Master Chief's recharging shields, super strong punches, sky high jumps and comforting motion sensors. ODST is Halo meets Ghost Recon (when the game was in development is was called “Halo Recon”.
Set just a few weeks before the events that take place in Halo 3, this game follows the stories of the ODST's trying to find one another after getting separated during entry into Earth's atmosphere.
The game initially follows a tight story to help you find you way and help to figure out that you must search the the city New Mombasa where you crash landed to find objects that your squad interacted with to trigger flashbacks.
New Mombasa is the biggest level the games developers Bungie created, a huge sandbox with hidden stories waiting to be triggered to help solve the mystery of what happened in New Mombasa and reunite the ODST squad.
Helping you along the way since don't play a Spartan any more. You have been equipped with a new low light vision hud (comes in handy since the games has taken a slightly film noir avenue), this vision toggles on and off clearly highlighting enemies and structures around you. A new silenced submachine gun rifle and an Auto mag pistol also beef up the strength of the OSDT.
Bungie are keen to draw the distinction that ODST is an “extension” of Halo 3 rather than expansion. The campaign size is roughly a third of Halo 3.
To justify the full retail price for the game, Firefight a new multi player mode is introduced. Firefight follows flavour of the month Gears of War's Horde or Call of Duty's Zombies. Four players play as ODST cooperatively on levels pitched against wave after wave of Covenant. Managing ammo and weapons players must also content with the fact that health diminishes and they will need to go back to spawn points for health packs.
After a play test of Firefight, its clearly still Halo 3 but with tweaks that give it a fresh approach. Released 22nd September 2009, ODST is sure to be played online for a long time to come. |
